Lee to the Braves

The Derrek Lee trade to Atlanta is official. The Cubs get three pitching prospects for the first baseman, who takes over for the injured Troy Glaus.

Atlanta already had Troy Glaus at first base but, in an unexpected move, the team announced he’ll go on the 15-day disabled list. General manager Frank Wren wants Glaus to rest his legs for a week, then head to Triple-A Gwinnett to get in some work at his former position, third base.

Presumably, the Braves envision a lineup late in the season – and the playoffs – that could include both Lee and Glaus.

That makes sense as they’ll move Prado back to second. The problem is that Lee isn’t a great hitter any more. His .251/.335/.416 slash line is poor for a first baseman. He’s been hot lately, but the good streak might not last. Of course, with a chance to get back to the playoffs, I could see him stepping up his game.

The Cubs get Tyrelle Harris, who is old for the low minors and striking out a ton of batters, Robinson Lopez, just 19 years old, and Jeffrey Lorick, who is also old for A ball. The two older pitchers might give the Cubs bullpen help in a season or two.
