Jeremy Bonderman threw eight shutout innings for Toledo Sunday. His return gives the Tigers another option in the rotation, and it should give Dontrelle Willis and Armando Galarraga motivation to pitch better.

Oswalt Won’t Change his Socks
Jose de Jesus Ortiz reports that Roy Oswalt will veto a trade to the White Sox:
Because Bill Scherrer, a special assistant to White Sox GM Kenny Williams, has been at the Astros’ last two series, there has been quite a bit of speculation nationally regarding the possibility of Oswalt landing with the White Sox a [...]

Keeping Cameron
Trade rumors swirled this winter about the Brewers trading Mike Cameron. He hit a home run and drove in three Sunday afternoon as the Brewers downed the Reds 5-2, putting some distance between the two NL Central rivals. Cameron’s getting on base at a .379 clip and with eleven home runs is slugging [...]

One Fewer With None
Garret Anderson got himself off the “No Home Run” list with his first shot of the year as the Braves defeated the Diamondbacks 9-3. He came into the game 13th in most at bats without a homer with 104 AB. Chone Figgins, with 189 at bats through Sunday afternoon, sits at the top [...]

More on Pedroia’s Power
Earlier today I commented on Dustin Pedroia’s lack of power this year. The Projo Sox blog found the answer:
For much of this season, Pedroia hasn’t been taking his signature huge swats at the ball, instead spraying it to all fields. The reason, he said, is that a pulled groin muscle has made it difficult [...]

Talking with Shawn
Dugout Central posts an extensive interview with Athletics prospect Shawn Haviland. Baseball Musings gets a mention:
Shawn: I visit Baseball Musings multiple times a day. Not only is it a great site that is updated non-stop but, David Pinto has given me some tips in writing my blog. I actually first met Mr. Pinto when [...]

Buck’s Back
John Buck remains in the hospital with a lower back injury. The Royals placed him on the 15-day disabled list today:
Manager Trey Hillman says he has no indication how long Buck might remain in the hospital or whether the “a slight herniation in his lower back” might require surgery.
Things keep going wrong for the [...]

Mr. Mackey on the Cubs
With apologies to South Park:
Okay. Now, uh, as your counselor, I’m here to tell you about Cubs why they’re bad, mkay? Uhso, first of all, uh, Derek Lee’s bad. You shouldn’t play Derek Lee. Anduh, Mike Fontenot is bad. You shouldn’t play Fontenot at third. Anduh, as for Cubs, well, Cubs are bad. [...]

Kennedy Power
You wouldn’t think a Kennedy would have much luck in the Dallas area, but Adam helped the Athletics salvage one game from their series with Texas by hitting two home runs. His second, in the top of the ninth, broke a 4-4 tie and proved the difference in the 5-4 victory.
Kennedy is slugging .622 [...]

The Curious Case of Fred Lewis
Fred Lewis batted fifth Sunday afternoon in the 5-3 Giants win over the Cardinals, collecting two hits and a walk. That raised his OBA to .376. With a great OBA and little power (both this year and for his career), Lewis seems like an ideal leadoff man. In fact, Lewis received most [...]

The Mighty Gwynn
Tony Gwynn, Jr. found a nice new home at the top of the Padres batting order. His two hits and a walk today raised his OBA to .393, just what a team wants from their leadoff hitter. He was on base when Gonzalez hit his 20th home run of the season as the [...]

Angels Comeback
The Angels stage a huge comeback, erasing an 8-1 deficit to defeat the Mariners 9-8. The tying run scored on a bases loaded walk, prompting this thought from Lookout Landing:
Perhaps when there are already two men on and you are protecting a one-run lead, it’s a bad idea to intentionally load the bases with [...]

White Sox Win
The White Sox score three runs in the ninth off John Bale and Juan Cruz to sweep Kansas City, 7-4. That cements Chicago’s second place standing in the AL Central, where they lead the Twins by 1/2 game. Zack Greinke allowed four runs and blew a 4-1 lead. He still pitched well, [...]

Garza Good, Twins Better
Matt Garza pitched well in his first performance against his old team, the Minnesota Twins. In seven innings he struck out six and walked one, a better ratio of K’s and BBs than he usually manages (he’s very close to 2:1). The Twins managed to score three runs against him, however, which was [...]

Doubles Power
Miguel Tejada no longer blasts home runs too often, but he’s knocking out doubles at a prodigious rate this season. The Astros’ shortstop hit his 20th of the season this afternoon and drove in the game winning run with a single as Houston defeated the Pirates 2-1. With 20 doubles in 49 games, [...]

Low Hit Moyer
For the first time this season, Jamie Moyer allowed fewer than seven hits in an outing. He held the Nationals to three hits over six innings, allowing just one run. That lowers his batting average allowed to .321. Despite the high average allowed and a 6.75 ERA, Moyer is 4-5. He [...]

No Action Jackson
Edwin Jackson came into today’s game tied with a number of pitchers for the lead in short shutouts with three. He came pretty close to a full one today, but gets pulled after eight innings. The Orioles managed just two hits and one walk against him, and one of those runners, Robert Andino was [...]

Game Winning Peralta
The Yankees come back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the Indians at four in the 8th, but Cleveland shows some selectivity in the ninth as a walk, sacrifice and a walk set up Jhonny Peralta for a single inside the third base line for the game winner.
The best news for the Yankees was that [...]

Maine Man
John Maine earns a short shutout as he lasts six innings against the Marlins. He left the game with a 1-0 lead, which the Mets extended to 3-0 in the seventh. That was a good thing as Putz gave the two runs back in the 8th for a 3-2 final.
Maine continues to pitch [...]

Getting to Greinke
The White Sox touch Zack Greinke for four runs so far as they bat in the fifth. That brings his ERA over 1.00 this season. He’s given up eight hits but no walks, three of the hits for extra bases. Podsednik has a double and triple so far.
Update: Due to a passed [...]

What Happened to Pedroia’s Power
Dustin Pedroia hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Red Sox a 4-1 lead over the Toronto Blue Jays. It was Pedroia’s second home run of the season. After hitting 17 in 2008, and at an age where his power should still be developing, I wonder why the [...]

Yankees Robbed
Down 4-0 in the top of the sixth, Derek Jeter hits a slow roller to shortstop. Asdrubal Cabrera makes a nice play, and the umpire calls Jeter out. The only problem was that Jeter was safe. The replay shows the play wasn’t even close, the ball wasn’t near the first baseman’s glove [...]

Moving Down the Spectrum at the Speed of Light
In a very short time, Pablo Sandoval moved from catcher to third base to first base. His career numbers so far, .352 OBA/.474 slugging are probably going to get better as he matures. They’re much more valuable at the defensive end of the defensive spectrum than at first base, however.

Games of the Day
The Yankees and Indians get started early with a 12:40 game as Phil Hughes faces Carl Pavano. Hughes is coming off his best game of the season, eight shutout innings against the Texas Rangers. Phil pitched better on the road this year where he allowed one home run in 15 2/3 innings, versus [...]

Sizemore Disabled
Grady Sizemore hits the disabled list due to elbow inflammation:
Sizemore had struggled at the plate and not played much in the field recently because of the injury. He went 1-for-4, hitting his team-leading ninth homer Saturday night against the Yankees, but is hitting only .223 overall.
That pretty much explains his poor season. His hitting [...]

Who would have thought Brian Fuentes would have a tougher time pitching in Anaheim than in Denver? In his career with the Rockies he posted a great 3.24 ERA at Coors Field. After allowing a three-run homer in the top of the ninth Saturday night, his home ERA this year stands at 6.30. [...]

Geoff Baker postulates why Raul Ibanez’s defense is so much better this year:
