The Pirates and Nationals finally pull the trigger on the Nyjer Morgan/Lastings Milledge deal:
The Pirates, who have pushed to restock a thin farm system by making numerous trades over the last year, get Milledge and reliever Joel Hanrahan from the Nationals for the fleet Morgan and left-hander Sean Burnett, a former first-round draft pick.
I like [...]

Hip to the DL
Mike Lowell goes on the disabled list due to his hip acting up:
The decision to disable Lowell, who underwent offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, was made the day after he’d had 15 CCs of fluid removed from that joint. Lowell had also received an injection of Synvisc on Monday. [...]

Games of the Day
I’m still on vacation, so this will be short and sweet.
Mariners at Yankees features Brandon Morrow against Joba Chamberlain. The Mariners open the three game series four games behind wild care leading New York. Watch for Ichiro, who is chasing a struggling Joe Mauer for the batting title.
The Angels and Rangers offer another [...]

Hinske Joins Yankees
The Yankees traded two minor leaguers to the Pirates for Eric Hinske:
Pittsburgh will receive right-hander Casey Erickson and outfielder Eric Fryer for the utilityman. In addition, the Pirates will give the Yankees cash.
The 31-year-old Hinske hit .255 in 106 at-bats this season with nine doubles, one homer and 11 RBIs, playing right field, first base [...]

Down on the Mets
Metstradamus isn’t predicting a bring future for his team:
And here’s how you know the worst is yet to come: When Luis Castillo drops a pop-up by trying to catch it with one hand, the Mets lose and become a national joke. But when Casey McGehee drops a pop-up by trying to catch it with one [...]

Rating the Two Great Yankees
Pinstripe Alley tries to make the case that Mariano Rivera is a greater Yankee than Derek Jeter. Sorry, I’m not buying it. Over their careers, Jeter produced about 15 more wins than Rivera, or about one per year.
At first blush, you might think Murti’s is an outlandish statement. Think about it, though, and [...]

Solo Homers
The Texas Rangers lost to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Monday night 5-2. The Rangers scored their two runs on solo home runs. This is a sign of the offensive slide they’ve been on for over a month.
I saw the Rangers succeeding if they were able to get their ERA around 4.50. [...]

Impressive Relief
The Dodgers defeated the Rockies Monday night by a score of 4-2 in 13 innings. The Dodgers bullpen posted one of the great relief performances of the year. In seven innings of work, not only did they keep Colorado off the scoreboard, they allowed just two hits (both by Jeff Weaver), walked one, [...]

Rays on a Roll
The Tampa Bay Rays won their sixth straight games, defeating Roy Halladay in his comeback from his injury. Jeff Niemann used his defense as 24 of the 27 batters he faced put the ball in play. He only gave up four hits as the Rays turned those batted balls into outs. Tampa [...]

The Return of Rich Harden
Rich Harden pitches his best game of the season, going seven innings against the Pirates, giving up one run, one walk and striking out nine. Harden’s ERA goes down to 4.57, still over one run higher than his career mark. He didn’t give up a home run, which was his problem this season. [...]

Watch Lincecum
I’m on vacation for a couple of days, so I can’t watch, but Tim Lincecum is perfect through four.
Update: Ankiel singled in the fifth. The Giants lead 4-0, and Lincecum has four strikeouts through five innings.
Update: Lincecum pitches a complete game two-hitter. He walks none and strikes out eight. It’s his second [...]

Snell-a-Vision
It really appears that the Pittsburgh Pirates and Ian Snell just don’t like each other.
Snell should have pitched back in the 1920s when independent minor leagues were still prevalent. He might have done very well for himself as a regular at that level.

Weeding Out Ballplayers
Jeremy Jeffress, a pitcher in the Brewers system, received a 100 game suspension for his second positive test of a drug of abuse. The drug appears to be marijuana.
I know the drug is illegal, but should pot abuse fall under the same punishment scheme as amphetamines, cocaine and heroin? One could argue that [...]

Rays Trades
Rays Index notes the positives for the Rays in trading Edwin Jackson and Jason Hammel:
If there is a silver-lining to the emergence of Jackson and Hammel as very good starting pitchers, it is that the Rays will soon have a reputation as developers of great start pitching, much as the Braves were in the 90s.

Mariano Riveria comes into the Yankees/Mets game with two out and two on in the 8th inning. He’d going for his 500th save.
Update: If Rivera converts this save, he’ll earn his 110th long save, a save of more than one inning. That will double the next closest total from 1996 on, 55 by [...]

Heath Bell pitched the ninth with just one walk to complete the combined one-hitter. Given this was against [...]

There seems to be some excitement in Detroit about the promotion of Ni Fu-Te.
Pitching for the Triple-A Mud Hens, Fu-Te Ni (FOO’-tay-nee) has 14 strikeouts and no walks in 14-1/3 innigs with a .184 average against versus left handers. He’s not too shabby against right-handers, though he projects to be best-equipped as a lefty-one-out-guy.
