Cliff Lee pitched 5 1/3 innings against the Giants before giving up a hit to the Giants. He’s walked one and struck out four as the Giants bat in the bottom of the sixth, trailing the Phillies 1-0.
That’s the only hit the Giants get as the teams go to the seventh.

Schmidt Happens
Jason Schmidt pitched six one-hit innings against the Atlanta Braves tonight, earning a short shutout. He walked five and struck out just three, however, which may indicate he’s not all the way back. His outing was good enough for a 5-0 Dodgers victory.
Schmidt is sort of the opposite of John Smoltz, who once [...]

Pitchers Night in Florida
Through four innings Rich Harden of the Cubs has nine strikeouts and one walk. Of the eight batters who put the ball in play, however, five have hits, including a solo home run by Jorge Cantu.
Chris Volstad only struck out two so far, but he’s perfect through four. This should be a good [...]

The Padres got four young pitchers for Peavy – Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Dexter Carter and Adam Russell.
In May, the Padres and White Sox agreed to a deal for Peavy, but the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner turned it down. But this time, Peavy agreed to [...]

More on the Reds Deals
The Reds give up three players for Rolen, and get one back for Hairston:
The Reds are sending Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart to Toronto for Scott Rolen.
That’s a high price to pay.
In exchange for Jerry Hairston Jr., the Reds are getting catcher Chase Weems. He was drafted in the sixth round in [...]

Nick of Time
The Nationals sent Nick Johnson to the Marlins at the last minute:
Nick Johnson has been traded to the Marlins for minor league starter Aaron Thompson. The deal was completed right at the 4 p.m. deadline. The lineup in the Nats’ clubhouse was just taken down.

Live Television Humor
Heidi Watney interviewed Justin Masterson outside the Red Sox clubhouse. Masterson was very gracious, saying he was going to miss his friends but happy another team found him valuable enough to trade Victor Martinez to get him. At the end of the interview, Watney started to give him a hug, but radio announcer [...]

Kotchman for LaRoche
The Red Sox just traded Adam LaRoche for Casey Kotchman, according to NESN. The Braves get LaRoche back. Maybe they were sorry they let him go? I’m not sure this really improves either team. LaRoche has more power. Maybe there’s another deal in the works. Kotchman gets on base [...]

High and Tight or Low and Away
Dave Allen pens a good roundup on pitch selection and location. It turns out the high-inside pitch produces the most run savings for a pitcher, but the low-outside pitch gives the hurler more room for error. That’s probably why Leo Mazzone wanted all his pitchers to start off hitters low and outside.
