Low Scoring Get Aways

I noted earlier that shutouts were working in some of the afternoon games, and the five contests played early all were fairly low scoring. With the Mets beating the Diamondbacks 5-2, the five losing team combined to score just three runs, three of those squads scoring zero. The best pitching performance of the afternoon belonged to Johnny Cueto, who pitched a complete game, allowed three hits and no walks while striking out 12 Pirates. The Reds won that game 4-0, Baltimore beat Tampa Bay 3-0, Milwaukee walked by St. Louis 5-1, and the Yankees downed the Cubs 3-0 behind a one walk, 10 K performance by Masahiro Tanaka. Twenty three runs in five games isn’t much offense at all.
