Games of the Day

Current Reds ace Johnny Cueto takes on a former Reds ace, Edinson Volquez as Cincinnati battle Pittsburgh. Cueto blows away batters this season with 35 K in 30 innings, walking just eight batters. Volquez allowed 16 hits in 21 innings despite just 13 K, but walked only four.

The Yankees travel to Boston as they introduce Masahiro Tanaka to Jon Lester. Many Japanese pitchers saw their control diminished when they moved to the North American major leagues, but Tanaka walked just two batters so far in 22 innings. Lester is right with him, as he walked four in 29 innings. Thanks to high K rates as well, both sport ERAs in the low twos. Jacoby Ellsbury makes his Boston debut for the Yankees as well.

For the fans of younger pitchers, Jose Fernandez and the Marlins take on Alex Wood and the Braves in Atlanta. Fernandez shows no sign of a sophomore slump as he struck out 33 in 23 2/3 innings. He has been hit a bit with runners on base, but with a .176 OBP allowed with the bases empty, he’s not in that situation very often. Wood, a left-handed pitcher, is killing right-handed batters this season, allowing a .219/.269/.356 slash line to them.

Finally, the Phillies send A.J. Burnett against the Dodgers and Hyun-jin Ryu. Despite pitching well, Burnett has yet to win for the Phillies as his good games on the mound have not coincided with good games by the Phillies offense. Ryu makes his sixth start of the season thanks to the early games in Australia. He’s yet to allow a home run in 28 innings.

Enjoy!
