Young Guns

Jose Fernandez and Alex Wood put on a strikeout clinic in Atlanta as they each pitch eight innings, combining for 25 strikeouts and and no walks. Wood allowed four hits to Fernandez’s three, and a double and single in a row against Wood led to the only run of the game, as the Marlins win 1-0. The two are 18 months apart in age, so this match-up may be repeated a number of times over the next few years.

The Day by Day Database goes back to 1957, and this is just the tenth time in that period two starters in a game combined for 20 strikeouts or more without issuing a walk. Roger Clemens and Aaron Sele combined for 27 with no walks on July 12, 1997, and Mark Prior and Javier Vazquez combined for 26 with no walks on April 9, 2003. Those are the only two games in the last 57 years to beat tonight’s contest.
