Well Groomed

Jacob deGrom may turn out to be one of those lower round draft choices that every one wonders, “How did we miss him?” He did wind up with Tommy John surgery in 2011, so at that point, deGrom didn’t look like that great a pick. At seasonal age 26, however, he’s fully matured. After his win over the Padres Tuesday night, deGrom is on a six-start roll in which his strikeouts are very high, his walks are low, and he hasn’t allowed a home run.

He doesn’t have an amazing fastball, but he mixes in a hard slider and a change up with a 10 MPH difference from his fastball. Since the Mets are a little worried about his innings, they may want to change the mix of his slider and change-up, as Zack Greinke did. Right now, however, deGrom is giving the Mets ace like pitching.
