Maybin’s Speed

Cameron Maybin got caught with amphetamines:

Maybin said in a statement released by the Major League Baseball Players Association the failed test was the result of a change in the medication he was using to treat Attention Deficit Disorder.

“I have been undergoing treatment for several years for a medical condition, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), for which I previously had a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Unfortunately, in my attempts to switch back to a medicine that had been previously OK’d, I neglected to follow all the rules and as a result I tested positive,” Maybin said. “I want to assure everyone that this was a genuine effort to treat my condition and I was not trying in any way to gain an advantage in my baseball career.”

For some reason, ADD seems to occur about twice as often in baseball players as in the general population. That leads me to wonder if this is a real problem, or an excuse for players to get amphetamines.

It’s not like the loss of his .247/.286/.368 slash line is going to hurt the Padres poor offense.

Was there such an ADD epidemic before the new testing regime? Hank Arron & Willie Mays used greenies, I don’t think that diminishes their accomplishments

I wonder how east coast teams are faring at least on the first few games of a west coast swing these days vs. in the past. A drop off would suggest that the ban is working.

As I understand it each team has a psychiatrist who evaluates players’ ADD/ADHD claims and recommends the TUEs.
