Weekly Look at Offense

The previous seven days represented the lowest offensive week of the season in terms of runs per game, with just 7.72 runs scored per contest. That brings the runs per game for the season down to 8.23, versus 8.41 at the same point in 2013. I would have thought with four days off, the players would be rejuvenated, but I guess the vacation helps the pitchers more than the hitters. I’ll note that offense was down in the week and a half after the break last season as well, so maybe four days off for batters isn’t such a great idea. In fact, it looks like offense was down so much in 2013 that the gap between the two seasons stayed the same. The gap continues to be due to a lack of home runs, 1.76 per game this season versus 1.97 last year.

But the purists love it. Bob Costas is beside himself with joy because all those gauche home runs are gone.

Meanwhile, everybody else is bored silly. Attendance is down another 350K so far this year. The total decline since the last attendance record in 2007 (when baseball averaged close to ten runs per game) is now about six million.

If the owners have to pay these ridiculous salaries, you’d think they would like to sell more tickets each year, not fewer.

Meanwhile, today’s first game is in the books. A 2-0 slugfest in Atlanta where both teams combined for seventeen whiffs. Yeah, that kind of “action” will pack ’em in.
