Barn Burners

The majors actually saw four rather high scoring and close games Tuesday night. The Angels and Orioles scored six runs each through seven innings, then each team kept threatening to score in extra frames. Manny Machado finally ended the game leading off the bottom of the 12th, hitting a 1-2 pitch out of the park.

The Yankees and Rangers saw Brett Gardner and J.P. Arencibia put on a show as both went four for five, Gardner a triple short of the cycle and Arencibia posting two doubles and two homers, while driving in seven runs. The Yankees, despite fewer hits and walks in the game, hit better with runners in scoring position and came out on top 12-11.

The Astros looked like they might cruise to a 4-1 win over Oakland, until the Athletics scored six runs in the ninth inning to win 7-4. There was no big hit, but a two doubles and four singles turned out to be more than enough against Chad Qualls and the rest of the Astros bullpen.

The Braves and Dodgers were tied at four going into the bottom of the seventh, but a Carl Crawford groundout put the Dodgers in the lead, and Matt Kemp hit his second home run of the game to ice the scoring, and the Dodgers went on to win 8-4. With Miami beating the Nationals, The top three teams in the NL East are separated by just five games.
