Wild Ninths

There have been some interesting ninth innings so far late on Sunday. Huston Street came in to pitch for the Angels against the Rangers with a 2-1 lead in the ninth, and gave up four straight singles for a 3-2 walk off win for Texas.

In what was a wild game before the ninth, the Pirates scored three in the top of the inning to take a 5-4 lead against the Nationals, Rafael Soriano getting booed off the mound. Mark Melancon could not hold the lead in the bottom of the inning, a pinch walk by Jayson Werth looming large. That game is still tied at five in the bottom of the 11th. (As I wrote the next paragraph, Hairston hit a sac fly to win the game 6-5 for the Nationals.)

Finally, in game one of a double header in Colorado, the Reds scored two in the top of the ninth for a 9-5 lead, but Aroldis Chapman walked the first four batters, then came out of the game. A sacrifice fly then set up a three-run homer by Drew Stubbs, and the Rockies come back for a 10-9 win.

Three reason not to leave the game early.

Update: It was Stubbs, not Blackmon, who homered in the ninth.

Drew Stubbs hit the walkoff in Colorado (against his former team). Blackmon had a hard line out to RF as the batter before.
