Games of the Day

Lance Lynn faces Gerrit Cole as the Cardinals and Pirates continue a series of Wild Card importance. Lynn and Cole come into the game with the same winning percentage, Lynn 14-8, Cole 7-4. Lynn is pitching great down the stretch, 6-2 with a 1.73 ERA since the start of July. He allowed just one home run in 57 1/3 innings during that stretch, in a game against the Pirates. Cole makes his second start since returning from the disabled list. He owns a 1.93 ERA against the Cardinals this season.

The Yankees go into Detroit two games behind the Tigers and 2 1/2 games behind the Mariners for the second wild card slot. Brandon McCarthy takes on Rick Porcello. McCarthy pitched 52 innings for the Yankees so far, about half of what he pitched with Arizona. He allowed just 1/5 of the home runs he did with the Diamondbacks, helping him to an ERA with the Yankees over three runs lower than when pitching for the Diamondbacks. Porcello allowed one run in seven innings in his only start against the Yankees this season, and lost.

Finally, the Marlins and Angels are both in the playoff hunt as Nathan Eovaldi visits Matt Shoemaker. With is last start, Eovaldi qualified for the year in the ERA race with 162 innings, although his 4.06 won’t put him among the leaders. That’s the first time he reached that level in a season. He’s allowed just 33 walks. Shoemaker picked up the Angels by allowing one hit over 7 2/3 innings the day after Garrett Richards went down for the season with a knee injury. He’s allowed just four walks in 27 1/3 August innings.
