Northwest Storm

The Washington Nationals had no problems with the dimensions of SafeCo Field Friday night as they hit six home runs against the Mariners, four of the off Felix Hernandez. The Nationals ended their losing streak with an 8-2 win. That was the most home run Hernandez ever allowed in a game, and the first time he allowed at least three home runs since June 1, 2012. Six was the most home runs hit in a game at SafeCo Field this season.

Five different Nationals homered, including two by Wilson Ramos. Bryce Harper went 3 for 4 with a dinger to raise his slugging percentage above .400. Hand injuries take long recoveries. Even after a player is cleared to hit again, it takes time to get the swing back. Harper is showing signs of returning to form, and having him healthy for the playoffs would make Washington even stronger than they look now.

The poor start by Hernandez gives Corey Kluber an opening in the AL Cy Young race. A great start by Kluber Monday could make the race close to even.

Last night was also the first time Felix had pitched at least 7 innings and recorded fewer than 2 strikeouts.
