Massive Tie Scenarios

The is one fascinating massive tie scenario in the American League, and a couple of possibilities in the National League. I’m not going into too much detail yet, because over the next few days the whole thing might fall part. Right now, however, there is a possibility for a five-way tie for the AL Central title and the the second wild card between the Royals, Tigers, Mariners, Yankees, and Indians. The most wins for this combination would be 94, but that’s a very tenuous number that depends on exact won-loss combinations between teams. There are plenty of chances at a lower number of wins. What it would trigger is a two-day playoff for the AL Central championship, then a two day playoff for the second wild card slot. Needless to say, I’m rooting for this one.

In the NL, the biggest tie would be between the Giants, Cardinals, Brewers, Braves, and Pirates for the NL Central and both wild card slots. That can happen at 93 wins, and again that depends on a very specific combinations of head-to-head records. This is slightly less interesting than the AL tie, since once the Central champ was determined, there would only be one day needed to determine the two teams playing in the wild card game.

A three way tie for the divisions is also possible, both at the same win level as the five way tie. Not quite as much fun, but it’s never happened.

It’s also possible the Dodgers get involved at some point and a six way-tie becomes possible. Two different divisions going to playoffs would be fun.

Stay tuned.
