The Atlanta Braves pitted three players against each other for the starting centerfield job. Jordan Schafer is the leading candidate, but the Braves may make a business decision similar to what the Orioles are doing with Matt Wieters:
But on Saturday, Schafer, the Braves’ hottest hitter, confided that he would be disappointed if he didn’t get the job he has been competing for with Josh Anderson and Gregor Blanco.
“Oh, 100 percent,” said Schafer, who had three hits in Saturday’s 6-4 loss to the New York Yankees. “Coming in here, they said everyone was competing for a job. It would be a huge letdown [to not get it]. …
“At the same time, you have to understand it’s kind of — there’s the business side of it. I don’t know right now if I could say I agree or disagree, but. …”
He didn’t go further down that road, finishing his answer with: “I’m just trying to go out there right now and prove every day that I’m ready and that’s where I should be.”
Since turning 20, Schafer’s minor league OBA really took off, and he’s seen increased power, too. If the Braves are going to win the NL East, it’s likely going to be in a close race given the quality of the Phillies and Mets. Unlike Baltimore, they really can’t afford to have a good hitter out of the lineup for two weeks just to save a year of free agency.
