Angels Tragedy

Nick Adenhart died in a car accident after last night’s game. Halos Heaven has links. Adenhart pitched six shutout innings last night. At least he went out on a high note.

From the OC Register:

Three people were killed and another person was seriously injured at an intersection in Fullerton early this morning in a three-vehicle crash that authorities said was caused by a motorist who ran a red light.

The accident occurred at East Orangethorpe Avenue and South Lemon Street just after midnight, said Fullerton police Lt. Craig Brower.

Police have not released the names of the people involved.

The Angels radio station 830 AM is reporting that starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in the crash.

What a terrible tragedy for the Adenhart family and the Angels. My deepest sympathies go out to all of them. I assume tonight’s game between the Angels and Athletics will be postponed.

Update: ESPNews is covering the story now, talking to sports writers about Adenhart’s potential.

Update: Pictures of the car here.

So the hit and run driver was drunk, and driving on a license suspended from a previous drunk driving conviction. What a surprise!

MLB can stick their moments of silence, their prayers, condolences, and their empty talk about what a tragedy this was. This wasn’t a tragedy, or an accident — it was an act of cold blooded multiple homicide, and every team was a willing enabler and accessory before the fact.

If MLB really wanted to make a statement about what happened last night they’d cancel all alcohol sales for today’s games. There’d almost certainly be fewer drunks on our roads this evening, and fewer families planning funerals tomorrow.

What was it those Blue Jays fans said last week? “You can go to a bar with a field, or you can go to a bar.”

As long as teams decide they’re just bars with a field they’ll be a big part of the problem that murdered Adenhart and his companions last night.

What a tragedy. I can’t imagine the pain his parents and family must be experiencing, especially after the joy they must have felt after his first start.

One of the big reasons why I insist on driving a SUV and my wife as well, is that small cars just don’t have a chance in these collisions.

As for MLB being reponsible because they sell alcohol, I do not get the logic, unless you are proposing prohibition. I do think the technolgy exists where a driver would not be able to start the car if they had no license, perhaps a valid license with a readable chip would need to be inserted into a slot which can read the chip in order for the ignition to work.
