The Astros place Jose Valverde on the disabled list after he tried to pitch through an injury:
Valverde strained his calf while chasing a ball that bounced off his right ankle last week. After sitting out a couple of games, he pitched the ninth inning Sunday and the calf swelled up again overnight. Valverde had 44 saves for Houston last season.
For the second year in a row he was off to a bad start, blowing two saves and posting a 5.63 ERA.
