Hank Blalock and Chris Davis each collected two hits Sunday afternoon in the Rangers 7-1 victory over the White Sox. Blalock went deep twice, while David knocked out a double and a homer. Those teammates are all about power this season. Their batting averages are low, and their OBAs are abysmal. Hank gets on base at a .297 clip and Chris is even worse at .289. The two, however, are pickup lots of extra bases. Blalock’s isolated power, his slugging percentage minus his batting average stands at .312, giving him more extra bases than hits (his BA is .257). Davis’s isolated power is at .260, also well above his .221 batting average. The two are out machines, but when they do hit, they drive the ball a long way. There’s value in that, and today they drove in four of the Rangers seven runs.

Blalock has a career .335 OBP, which isn’t great but indicates that he’ll probably improve a little as the season goes on. Davis got off to a horrendous start but has been getting well lately: .292/.320/.708 in his last seven games. His .331 OBP last year and .357 OBP in the minors also indicate he’ll get a little better this year.
Neither of these guys is an on-base machine, but their power is valuable in the middle to lower part of the order.
