ShysterBall on Jeff Francoeur:
I started to laugh until I realized that, yes, the Rockies’ error that prevented Francoeur from hitting into the DP is truly his best moment in a couple of weeks. And then I cried.
He hit in each of the first nine games of May, but since he’s two for 29 with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Francouer’s had his problems, but keep an eye on the Braves. In a big offense year their staff ERA is better than anybody in the NL East except the Mets, who benefit from their cavernous park (New York’s ERA is more than a full run better at home than on the road).
The Braves haven’t hit much yet, but a small uptick in offense could get them to the top of the division. They’re only two-and-a-half out now. I heard Gary Cohen, the Mets play-by-play guy, airily dismiss the Braves when Keith Hernandez (one of my favorite analysts, by the way) cautioned that Atlante might make some noise in the race.
Cohen thinks it will be a two-team race between New York and Philly. Like Hernandez I’m not so sure.

I agree with you, Casey, that the Braves could make some noise in this race. Their starting pitching has been great, although the bullpen can be a bit hit and miss.
However I’m not sure how much better their offense will be unless they trade for someone. As pathetic as their outfield home run totals were last year (27) they are on pace to match that again this year. They had 14 hits I think last night, and only 2 doubles, the rest singles. I don’t know how consistently they can score 4+ runs with that level of power. But I hope to be pleasantly surprised!
