Myers Frayed

Brett Myers underwent an MRI today and it showed a frayed labrum in his right hip.

Amaro said in a statement that the right-hander will seek a second opinion from a specialist before a decision is made about his next start or whether he will go on the disabled list.

Myers told The Philadelphia Inquirer on Thursday that doctors said he likely will need surgery to repair the damage.

I don’t remember this injury much before the last two seasons. Did players just play through it until their careers ended in the past? Does anyone know if the surgery is a fairly new development, or am I just confused by all the recent star players needed hip surgery?

Will Carroll was on the BS Report (5/14/09 around the 19:30-20:30 mark) and said “just a year ago these were being diagnosed as groin strains. Because that’s how it presents, it’s a hip problem that’s internal but the pain is on the medial side of the leg. But now, because GE made a change in the magnet in their MRI, we can actually discover these and correct them properly.”

Was really glad I had heard that, because it seemed odd to have all these similar injuries pop up around the same time.

Scott above is correct. They were happening before, they were just diagnosed incorrectly.

That’s very interesting. One would expect this to add to the quality of players’ careers since they seem to fix this just fine.

having gone through a hip resurfacing (had these been available back in the day, Bo Jackson could have had one and kept playing!) any operation on the hip is a tough recovery.

That said – Phillipon (who operated on a-rod) pioneered some arthroscopic tools and methods so things should be better if it’s labrum only

the pain does present as groin/low back/knee pain depending on severity and person.
