    • We all know what a night out at the ballpark costs. While it may be "priceless", it's anything but that when the credit card bill arrives. A cash advance can help.

    Waivers on Padilla

The Rangers are exploring the trade market by asking for waivers on Vicente Padilla:

They took the first towards doing that on Wednesday by placing RHP Vicente Padilla on outright waivers, major league sources said. The move would allow the Rangers to trade Padilla to any club if he clears waivers or deal with a club that makes a claim. Citing MLB rules which forbid talking about what players may or may not be on waivers, GM Jon Daniels declined to comment on Padilla’s status.

Daniels did, however, acknowledge the Rangers have begun to search for additional help for a team that has surged to the front of the AL West race.

“It’s that time of year,” Daniels said. “There are areas of interest that clubs would like to discuss and they are starting to do that. I expect that will pick up after the draft.”

I’m looking at the calendar, and it’s not clear to me when the non-waiver trading period begins. June 16th?

I could very well be wrong, but I believe that the “non-waiver” trade period is every time EXCEPT after July 31. The June 16 date refers to players who signed as free agents in the offseason, and the 15-day free agency election period is the period from the end of the World Series (or maybe it is November 1) through 15 days later by the end of which an eligible player must file for free agency. This keeps teams from signing a free agent and then immediately trading that player.

If he gets through waivers now, they don’t have to worry about passing him through waivers before an August trade, correct?

@Theron: I think the Waivers expire on July 31.
