  • Priceless

    • We all know what a night out at the ballpark costs. While it may be "priceless", it's anything but that when the credit card bill arrives. A cash advance can help.

    Double Complete

The Cardinals defeat the Reds 3-1 as Chris Carpenter and Aaron Harang both pitch complete games. Harang only got to pitch eight innings as St. Louis led going into the ninth. Carpenter pitched efficiently, tossing just 95 pitches, 66 for strikes. He only struck out three, but only three of the 25 balls in play against him went for hits, and two double plays erased most of those runners. His only mistake was to Laynce Nix, who homered for the Cardinals only run. It was Carpenter’s first home run allowed this season. His ERA now stands at 0.71, and opponents are batting .146 against him.

Harang gave up eight hits and two walks, but four Red double plays kept the game in hand. Albert Pujols hit a two-run shot in the third, and that was enough for the win. The Reds fall back to 2 1/2 games behind St. Louis, and the Cardinals move into a tie for first with the Brewers.

Update: Cole Hamels throws a shutout against the Dodgers. Like Carpenter, he didn’t strike out many (5) but only allowed five hits, walked none, erased two runners on double plays, and threw just 97 pitches. Sixty eight of Hamels’s throws went for strikes. Unlike Carpenter, he didn’t allow a home run. The game lowers his ERA to 4.40 as the Phillies win 3-0.

That’s the first time the Dodgers were shutout at home this year. LA is in a bit of a scoring slump lately. In their last eight games they’ve scored 20 runs, but managed to go 4-4.
