In what I think is an unusual move, the Red Sox take out Josh Beckett with a 6-0 lead after six innings. He threw 94 pitches, but allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out eight. The Yankees are more than capable of scoring six runs in three innings, why change something that’s not broken. I understand that the Red Sox want to save Beckett as much as possible, but I would have let him go another inning.
I think the weather played a large part in the decision. No reason to keep him out in the cold drizzle and risk an injury.
True.
Beckett threw 119 pitches in his previous start. Tito said afterwards that this played a part in his decision to cut short the start versus the Yanquis. Plus, the Boston bullpen has been closet to lights-out the last couple weeks — Francona was justifiably confident Delcarmen, Ramirez, and Bard would be able to keep the MFY in check the final three frames.
