Joe Mauer went 2 for 6 Friday night in a 16 inning Tiger/Twins marathon. The Tigers got off to a 6-0 lead by the third inning, and extended it to 7-1 after 3 1/2. The Twins brought it back to five in the bottom of the inning, then scored five runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth, Mauer launched a shot the opposite way to left that looked like it might go out, but Kelly caught the ball at the wall. There was no scoring until the 14th when each side tallied one run. Then in the 16th, the Tigers scored three times. The Twins tried to mount a comeback, but only scored one run as they fell 11-9. That leaves them four back of Detroit and 1 1/2 games behind Chicago.
The Twins pen gave up three hits, two walks and one run in their first ten innings of relief, but R.A. Dickey didn’t have it as he allowed nine hits in three innings. Miner was the first man in from the pen when French faltered, but he gave up the five runs in the sixth.
Mauer is now batting .390. The odds of his batting .400 for the season are about 1 in 340 based on a 162 game season, about one in 1150 based on a 140 game season.
