Freel a Royal

The Cubs trade Ryan Freel to the Royals, making him a three-team player this season:

The Chicago Cubs have traded utilityman Ryan Freel to the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named.

The 33-year-old Freel started the year with Baltimore and later was traded to the Cubs. He’s been injured this season and was batting .140 overall when Monday’s trade was made.

The Royals also get cash to help offset Freel’s salary. He was expected to join Kansas City for Tuesday night’s game at Detroit.

Freel actually has a good OBA, and if the Royals acquired him over the winter I might have liked the deal. Royal Blues thinks this is setting up another trade:

And if this is some sort of precursor to a Mark Teahen trade…Well, that one had better be a damned good trade.

I could see KC trading Teahen for prospects to help next year and letting Freel play out the string at third. Apart from trying to get Greinke the Cy Young award, the Royals aren’t playing for much right now.
