The Rockies received another quality start Wednesday afternoon as Jorge De La Rosa allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings in a 10-4 rout of the Washington Nationals. That gives the Rockies 49 quality starts, second to the Cubs who have 51.
Game scores measure something similar to quality starts, but breaks down the pitching performance a bit more completely. Coming into today, the Rockies ranked ninth in average game score (for starting pitchers) at 51.0. That’s not bad for a team that plays half its games in Coors Field. There are three positives in the calculation of game score; outs recorded, innings completed after the fourth inning, and strikeouts. The Rockies strength is completing innings. The Cardinals average more outs recorded by starters, but the Rockies are better one average at completing innings late in games. San Francisco owns the strikeout category by a wide margin, giving them the highest average game score, 54.7.
The Rockies resurgence under Jim Tracy is driven by the starting pitching, and this is just another example of why they are so good, their ability to hang around in games. With De La Rosa earning the win today, the Rockies starters record their 37th win, most in the majors (Boston with 36 plays tonight).
On the negative side, the Dodgers do the best job of avoiding hits, walks and runs. They post average negatives of 21.6, the lowest in the majors. They just don’t go deep into games as Torre is happy to bring in his great bullpen.
Update: Here’s the table for all the teams.
