Lopez Head North

Feliple Lopez went 0 for 4 in his last game for the Diamondbacks as Joel Pineiro pitched another fine game, the Cardinals defeating the Diamondbacks 2-1. After the game, the DBacks second baseman found himself traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. He brings a .364 OBA to his new team, something that should work well in their leadoff slot:

Milwaukee has been without starting second baseman Rickie Weeks after he had season-ending surgery on his wrist in May. Since then, 38-year-old veteran Craig Counsell and rookie Casey McGehee have filled in, but Lopez gives the Brewers a more consistent veteran.

“It’s exciting,” Lopez said from St. Louis. “It’s tough leaving the guys here. At the same time, I’m excited for the opportunity.”

Arizona gets outfielder Cole Gillespie and right-hander Roque Mercedes. Gillespie is a 25-year-old AAA player with a great minor league OBA. At age 22, Mercedes finally mastered A-Ball. We’ll see if either of them develops into a major leaguer.
