Brandon Webb decided to undergo surgery to fix his ailing shoulder:
Webb’s father, Philip Webb, told the Daily Independent of Ashland, Ky., that Dr. Keith Meister of the Rangers will perform surgery on his son’s right shoulder on Monday in Arlington, Texas.
Webb, the 2006 NL Cy Young winner, had met with Meister this week after consulting with team doctors and three other specialists earlier this month. He had been looking for a way to alleviate stiffness and soreness in his shoulder without surgery. The other specialists recommended exercises to strengthen his rotator cuff. After meeting with Meister, the surgical option was chosen.
Now the tough decision belongs to the Diamondbacks. They have an option on Webb for next season, $8.5 million. They can exercise that and hope he comes back, or buy him out for $2 million and let him become a free agent. Even if Webb comes back at the level of a third starter, $8.5 million is a very reasonable amount of money.
