Smoltz Designated for Assignment

It looks like John Smoltz’s Hall of Fame career ended on a poor note as the Red Sox designated him for assignment.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein traveled down to New York to personally tell Smoltz that the team had designated him for assignment. The move gives Boston 10 days to trade, release or send Smoltz to the minors.

“When he woke up today, he said, ‘How can I help the team win?'” Epstein said. “But he’s a realist and understands the results have not been what we were looking for.”

I wonder, give than Smoltz did put up a very good K/BB, if he could help a team that played in a good pitcher’s park. The Giants might be a good team for him, since AT&T park is a tough place to hit home runs.

Sad way for for Smoltz to possibly end his career. I wonder if he would accept a bullpen role again, or if any team would take the risk.

Babe Ruth ended his career too old, trying to play for some team in Boston. It didn’t seem to have effected his legacy too much.
