Brian Roberts just hit his 48th double of the season to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead over the Twins. With 48 doubles in 125 games, Roberts is on a pace for 62 doubles on the season. That total would tie him with Paul Waner for the fifth best single season total in the history of the majors. No one reached 60 doubles since 1936, although Todd Helton hit 59 in 2000.
There have been a number of players who started the season hot in the doubles category, threatening Earl Webb’s record of 67. Roberts, however, is hitting more as the season progresses. He hit 8 in April and May, 9 in June, 11 in July and now 12 in August. A really hot September could get him close to Webb.
