David DeJesus tries to make an over-aggressive play in left field, and it ends up cost Zack Greinke a run. Choo hit a high fly ball deep down the leftfield line. DeJesus ran to try to make a catch at the wall, but he miss-judged the ball and it hit high off the wall and bounded away from him. Choo ended up with a triple and scored on a Hafner liner to left that DeJesus just missed on a sliding catch attempt. It’s possible with two out that Choo might not have scored from second on that Hafner hit. Greinke is charged with an earned run, and the score is tied at one. Zack did his best to make the one run stand up, but the defense, in an effort to save the shutout, may have cost him one.
Update: Greinke does not come out for the eighth, so with the score 1-1 he cannot get the win. He lowers his ERA to 2.19. That ranks as the 8th best season among AL pitchers in the designated hitter ERA (1973 on, minimum 162 innings in a season). He’s now allowed 50 earned runs in 205 1/3 innings. Zack should have four starts left. If he pitches a total of 28 innings and allowed one earned run, he would be just the fourth pitcher in that ERA to finish with an ERA under 2.00. Pedro Martinez in 2000 posted a 1.741, Ron Guidry in 1978 came in at 1.743, and Roger Clemens in 1990 finished at 1.93.
