Massive Tie Scenario

Sunday was a mixed day for the massive tie scenarios. The Giants defeated the Dodgers and the Rockies lost, so the chances of a three-way tie in the NL West improved. With the Phillies winning two and the Marlins losing, the five way tie didn’t do as well. A three-way tie between the Dodgers, Rockies and Phillies does nothing to add games, as the Phillies simply win the east, and head-to-head record would determine the division winner and wild card in the west.

The following outcomes result in a five-way tie with the highest winning percentage:

  • Dodgers 10-8
  • Phillies 13-7
  • Rockies 13-5
  • Giants 18-1
  • Marlins 19-0

A three-way tie for the wild card is still possible, but the Giants need to bring the Rockies back with their three-game series that starts tonight.

Texas was the only one of the AL four-way tie contenders to lose on Sunday. They now stand six games out of the division with 20 games to play, so any massive tie in the AL is quickly becoming unlikely.

The following outcomes result in a four-way tie with the highest winning percentage:

  • Yankees 7-11
  • Angels 13-7
  • Red Sox 15-5
  • Rangers 19-1

The above requires the Rangers to go 6-1 against the Angels, and the Red Sox to lose two out of three games to the Angels. The three way tie between the Angels, Red Sox and Rangers remains the most likely massive tie. Just as in the NL, a three-way tie between the Yankees, Red Sox and Angels does nothing to produce extra games, as New York and Boston’s head-to-head record would determine the division winner.

Here are the outcomes for today’s games that should improve the chances of a massive tie:

  • The Angels defeat the Yankees
  • Texas downs Oakland
  • Florida wins over St. Louis
  • Texas wins two from Seattle
  • The Pirates beat the Dodgers
  • Colorado loses to San Francisco

One thing that will make he five-way tie tough is that the Dodgers play ten games against the Pirates and Nationals over the last three weeks.
