    Tim’s Timing

Tim Lincecum is going to cost the Giants some dollars due to his super two status. Some people might see this as a poor job by Brian Sabean, but I can’t complain about this. Somebody has to be a super two, and in the long run, I’d rather have an organization trying to win every year than worrying about a year of arbitration. If you come up with someone like Tim, take care of that years with a long term contract before arbitration becomes an issue, like the Rays did with Evan Longoria. The Giants should offer Tim five years, $60 million now and put that worry away for a while.

David, there is no way in the world that Lincecum would take a 5 year $60 million offer, especially with a guy named Zito in the rotation making more than double that. Think about it man.

@smittygam: Zito has little to do with Lincecum, because Zito’s money came via free agency. Lincecum will be compared to the best pitchers of his age. My guess is he’ll make $40 million in arbitration over the next four years, if he stays healthy. Then, when he becomes a free agent he’ll blow Zito’s contract out of the water.

The $60 million would be guaranteed, and Tim loses only one year of free agency. In other words, he doesn’t make that much less that he would if he stays healthy, and a lot more than if he gets hurt. It’s a very reasonable offer.
