The Padres officially made Jed Hoyer their new general manager:
Moorad has said he wants a more “strategic approach” from his GM. Towers was known more as a seat-of-the-pants GM who built four NL West winners during his 14 seasons as GM, and had his 1998 club reach the World Series, where it was swept by the Yankees.
Really? Towers always seemed to have a plan to me, he just didn’t always execute it well. Dave Littlefield or Bill Bavasi seemed to operate more like that. Then again, Moorad knows Towers better than I do. Maybe Hoyer will have better luck executing his plans now that ownership is more stable.
Update: Here’s a Hoyer anecdote from Gaslamp Ball.
