Cliff Lee tries to extend the Phillies season one more day as the Yankees send out A.J. Burnett to clinch a World Series trophy. Lee shut down the Yankees in game one of the World Series, continuing his dominance in the post season. Lee allowed five runs in four starts during the 2009 playoffs. Three of them were unearned, giving him a 0.54 ERA. In an LP number of innings (33 1/3), Lee has yet to give up a home run, and sports a 10/1 strikeout to walk ratio, having fanned 30 and walked three. Two of those games were against very selective teams, the Dodgers and Yankees.
Burnett’s had his ups and downs in the playoffs so far, pitching well against the Twins and Phillies, not so well against the Angels. Like Lee, A.J. has yet to yield a home run in the post season, but the Angels managed to string hits against him, by not striking out. The Phillies, on the other hand, when down on strikes nine times in Burnett’s seven innings of work. If the K’s are working for the Yankees’ righty, he’ll be fine, as in his two games against the Angels he struck out seven in 12 1/3 innings, in his other two game he struck out 15 in 13 innings.
Lee will try one more time to keep the bullpen quiet. If it ends up a close game where both pitchers come out after six or seven innings, the Yankees have a great chance of wrapping things up tonight. My guess, however, is that we see a game six on Wednesday.
Enjoy!

The Phillies desperately need to get runners on base before they hit home runs. I think every single HR they’ve hit has been a solo shot.
