Via MetsBlog.com, the Royals dump Mark Teahen on the White Sox:
The Daily News learned the White Sox have agreed to send second baseman Chris Getz and third baseman Josh Fields to the Royals for Mark Teahen, who is expected to replace Jermaine Dye as Chicago’s right fielder.
Teahen hit .271 with 12 homers and 50 RBI for the Royals in ’09, but in 77 games lifetime against the White Sox he has batted .277 with 12 homers and 41 RBI, which may explain why they wanted him on their side.
Fields was supposed to be the up and coming White Sox third baseman before Gordon Beckham took over. Fields isn’t very good, but he’s going to be 27 next season, so if he’s going to have a break out year, 2010 is likely to be it.
Getz will be 26 next season, and put up a decent OBP in the minor leagues. He’s the main part of the deal for the Royals. Unfortunately, according to FanGraphs, he had a poor year fielding in 2009, and the Royals need better defense.
Frankly, I don’t see where this trade helps either team that much. Teahen was a slightly better player than Dye in 2009. Niether Getz nor Fields adds that much offense or defense. It just seems the teams dumped players they no longer wanted nor needed.
