FanGraphs looks at the very short J.J. Putz era in Queens.
From the Mets’ standpoint, they sunk 6 million dollars and 7 players into acquiring Putz, Jeremy Reed, and Sean Green. The trade has produced 0.1 WAR from Putz, -0.7 WAR Reed, and -.1 WAR from Green. Unless Reed and Green somehow become productive major leaguers, this trade will go down as historically bad for New York.
The Mets bullpen will likely be a focal point for the front office again this winter. We’ll find out if they’ve learned their lesson.
The Mets had to hope that Putz’s high 2008 walk rate would come down. Instead, his high 2008 strikeout rate was cut in half, while he remained wild. That was a formula for disaster. The Mets obviously don’t think his elbow will be good enough in 2009 for a return to the bullpen, so some team can pick him up cheap and try to build him back into a good reliever.

I thought Putz would be great this year. Nope. These guys have it right. The Mets look poised for another bad signing.
