Via Bronx Banter, Mariano Rivera pitched part of the post season with a rib cage injury:
Rivera, who tossed 34 pitches against the Los Angeles Angels in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series, said he injured himself in the A.L.C.S.
Manager Joe Girardi said Rivera’s injury occurred in Game 2 of the World Series. Rivera pitched two innings and threw 39 pitches while saving a 3-1 victory.
“He was a little sore back there,” Girardi said. “It happened the first time he went two innings. That was when he first felt it. He had a day off and we checked him. We figured we’d always use him an inning. He was fine. It was something we had to watch.”
I’m guessing Rivera won’t be seeing anymore two inning saves in the future, especially in cold weather. It’s also interesting that in game six Girardi had more confidence in an injured Rivera than a healthy Phil Hughes.

People have said for years that Mariano wouldn’t be going for 2 innings or multi innings anymore. Torre used to say it. So, far, it hasn’t happened. There is a reason.
