Jeremy Affeldt pitches in relief for the San Francisco Giants. Affeldt underwent a transformation in 2007. Prior to that season he posted an ERA of 4.53. In three seasons since then he’s posted a 2.88 mark. The biggest difference is an increase in strikeouts from 6.9 per nine to 8.0 per nine. He lowered his walk rate slightly, but also raised his walk rate a bit as well.
A big reason for this might just be his move to the National League. For most of the first five seasons of his career, he toiled for the Kansas City Royals. Since he’s pitched for the Rockies, Reds and Giants, really coming into his own with San Francisco in 2009. He posted his best season in terms of limiting batters offense with a .197/.306/.277 opposition slash line. I would describe this as effectively wild, but his high walk rate should be a long term worry. Eventually, batters will wait for a good pitch and start hitting him again.
