Vernon Wells underwent wrist surgery, as he never quite healed from a 2008 injury:
The team said Friday that doctors repaired cartilage in his wrist, which he broke diving to make a catch against the Indians in 2008.
Wells struggled through one of his worst seasons as a pro in 2009, batting just .260 with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs.
The Blue Jays got off to a good start without Wells hitting, but they needed him to come around to take up the slack when their early hot hitters faded back to normal. That didn’t happen. It’s not clear who to blame here, Wells for trying to play through the injury or the Jays for allowing him to do so. The season could have turned out differently if Vernon had a healthy wrist. This injury may very well justify Ricciardi’s faith that Wells will bounce back from this season.
