Rich Aurillia played first base for the San Francisco Giants in 2009, and recently declared free agency. Rich strikes me as someone who always finds a job based on a few good seasons he was unlikely to repeat. From age 27 to 29, Aurilia hit for good power as a shortstop. At his peak, he was a valuable player. His batting fell off after that, and it looked like he might be out of baseball until he landed in Cincinnati, where the park made him look like a power hitter again. Without that stint, it’s unlikely he would still be playing baseball. He hasn’t hit anything like a first baseman since returning to the Giants, and how the Giants justify giving him 921 plate appearances over the last three years is beyond me. A AAA first baseman would have hit better and cost fewer dollars. I doubt Rich will play in 2010.
