Paul Bako served as the backup catcher for the Phillies in 2009. He filed for free agency at the end of the season. Paul defines journey man, having changed teams 11 times in a 12-year career.
Offensively, Bako is a fairly useless player. He draws a decent amount of walks, but they don’t make up for his poor hitting and lack of power. His career OPS is a mere .623. He never even slugged close to .400 in a single season. Bako’s value comes down to his defense. Bill James online breaks down offensive and defensive win shares from 2002 on, and Bako generates more wins from defense in seven of those eight years. He’s a good backup, especially if you want a defensive catcher late in the game.
