Rocco Baldelli played the outfield for the Boston Red Sox in 2009. He is currently a free agent. Baldelli was once a hot prospect for the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays, but injury and illness derailed his career. Early on, Rocco’s offensive strength came from his batting average and his base running. Before his Tommy John surgery, he generated a good batting average, but didn’t get on base much nor hit for power. When he returned after the surgery, he was approaching his peak years and his power surged. More injuries, however, sapped that. He also suffers from channelopathy, causing him to fatigue quickly.
Through it all, Baldelli remained a high percentage base stealer. He didn’t run with the Red Sox, but for his career he’s stolen 59 bases in 75 attempts, a 78% success rate.
At this point, however, Baldelli is not going to be a star. He neither hit for average, OBP nor power in 2009. He’ll end up someone’s cheap fourth outfielder.
