Desperate for Help at Short

This story makes me believe that either teams are pretty desperate for a shortstop or the financial situation is so bad they want to find a really cheap player for the position:

Jason Beck of MLB.com has reported that the Tigers are interested in Bobby Crosby. An industry source confirmed to Beck that the Tigers have had multiple discussions on Crosby, including talks with his agent.

Like Adam Everett a year ago, Crosby is hitting free agency coming off an injury-shortened season in which he did not end the year as a starting shortstop. Agent Paul Cohen told Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports that about a half-dozen teams were showing interest in Crosby. That was before Boston signed Marco Scutaro.

What exactly in Bobby Crosby’s record indicates he’s a major league player
? Apart from being an injury waiting to happen, the man can’t hit. Four years in a row, he posted OBPs under .300 with little power. He’s a decent fielder but not a great one. I suppose if he’ll take $600,000 a year to play, it’s not a horrible move, but I have to believe there’s some 22 year-old out there who can’t hit either but is a real wizard with the glove. He’ll cost league minimum and will have a chance to get better.
