Matsui Joins the Angels

Tyler Kepner reports Hideki Matsui signed a one-year deal with the Angels for $6.5 million. The link is via Chad Jennings who writes:

It appears several writers got the same email from Hideki Matsui’s agent, Arn Tellem. He wrote to Sam saying, ”I can confirm that we are in serious discussions with the Angels. I have no further comment.”

Tyler Kepner at the Times, though, is reporting that it’s a done deal with Matsui getting a one-year contract to become the Angels new designated hitter.

I’m guessing the Angels are waiting for the results of a physical. I suspect the generally warmer weather will be good for Hideki’s knee. There’s no word on if he’ll be a straight DH or play the outfield as well.

Matsui posted a .274/.367/.509 slash line in 2009, better than Vlad Guerrero’s .295/.334/.460. Hideki is a lefty who hit left-handed pitchers extremely well in 2009, with 13 of his 28 homers coming against LHP. It might have been Yankee Stadium, however, as nine of those came at home. It’s a nice deal for the Angels, not too much money for potentially very good production. Plus, they’ll should get a share of Japanese advertising.

Damn. I’ll miss Godzilla. I’m disappointed that Cashman didn’t bid $7M, which I think would still have been a good deal. I wonder if this means the Yankees have someone else in their sites, or if it just means they’re committed to getting younger.
