Ed Wade signed his old friend Brett Myers to a one-year contract.
Myers needs to pass a physical exam next week before the deal can be finalized.
The 29-year-old righthander started the last three season openers for the Phillies. In eight seasons with the Phils, Myers was 73-63 with a 4.40 ERA in 240 games. Myers served as the team’s closer for most of 2007 and saved 21 games.
The Phillies cut ties with Myers shortly after the 2009 season. He had missed most of the season with a hip injury that required surgery.
Myers allows lots of home runs, but some of that was the ballpark. He also keeps his walks down. I would be worried about his injury history and his declining strikeout rate. All that said, a rotation that sends Roy Oswalt, Wandy Rodriguez and Brett Myers out 1-2-3 could be pretty good.

This may turn out to be a good signing if Myers doesn’t give up too many bombs in that homerun haven. I question his attitude and dedication, but he is talented. I wish the Mariners had signed him.
