Alcides Escobar plays shortstop for the Milwaukee Brewers. He ended the 2009 season well, giving the Brewers the reason they needed to trade J.J. Hardy. Escobar’s batting average was more impressive than his OBP and slugging percentage, but he’ll play 2010 as a 23-year-old, so he has plenty of time to grow as an offensive player. His career minor league numbers were close to his 2009 line, but he was improving as he rose through the Brewers system. If his fielding is any good (so far he hasn’t shown that), the Brewers can live with a high BA, okay OBP player at the position.

Who would you rank higher, Alcides Escobar or Elvis Andrus?

@Chuck: Probably Andrus due to his better defense. That could easily change by the end of the year.

The advanced billing on Escobar is that he is an OK hitter but a far above average defender. When he came up last year he looked unsure of himself in the field. As he got some playing time under his belt, his defense was noticeably better *looking*. He made 2-3 plays that made your eyes pop. I realize that glitz is no substitute for range and sure-handedness, but I suspect that Escobar will be just fine in the field.
