Players A to Z, Scott Eyre

Scott Eyre pitched in relief for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009. He is currently a free agent. In his 61 games with the Phillies over parts of two seasons, Eyre pitched much more impressively than at any other time in his career. Before arriving in the city of brotherly love, Eyre posted a 4.42 ERA with 7.4 K per nine innings and a high walk rate of 4.7 per nine innings. Since joining the Phillies, those numbers changed to a 1.62 ERA, 8.1 K per 9 and 3.9 walks per nine. Of course, that’s over just 44 1/3 innings with the Phillies, so small sample size concerns loom large.

One thing that did change, however, was the Phillies use of him as a LOOGY instead of as a more general reliever. With the Cubs, for example, he faced 217 LHB, 342 RHB, or 39% of the time he held the platoon advantage. With the Phillies, that he faced 92 LHB, 89, RHB. So 51% of the time Charlie Manuel got Scott the platoon advantage. Using Scott properly made his stats much better.

Update: I’m told Scott Eyre retired. I thought that might have happened, but my quick web search showed him on a list of free agents.
