Colletti Calls Out Kemp

Ned Colletti called out Matt Kemp on the radio Tuesday.

“Why is it? Because he got a new deal?” Colletti said in reference to Kemp’s new two-year, $10.95 million contract. “Can’t tell you. But you know, it’s below-average. If this is the last day of the season and people are voting for the Gold Glove, his name is not even on the ballot. It’s a shame that he would go from where he was a year ago to revert back to when the ball goes up in the air and you’re not sure where it’s going, or if it’s going to get caught.”

6-4-2 Is not happy with this:

I’m with Roberto Baly — just what the hell does Colletti hope to accomplish here? It reminds me of the idiotic Mike Port and the shabby treatment he handed certain players (whose names escape me now, and my Angels history is upstairs at the moment). But this is not the Dodger Way, nor is it the way of winning organizations.

Remember all those years when people examining defense kept saying how poorly Derek Jeter played shortstop? Brian Cashman never agreed with those evaluations in public. Privately, however, he got on Jeter’s case, and Jeter worked on improving his defense at short. That’s the right way to do this. Publicly, managers and GMs need to protect their charges. Privately, they can yell at them as much as they want.

Update: Kemp responds.

Every time I’ve seen Kemp play the Mets, before yesterday, he’s been a great player, including fielding. He looked like a slug in the field yesterday. That being said, Colletti is a jerk for saying things like this in an interview. Reminds me of when Willy Randolph during an interview a few years ago said Angel Pagan was going to “fall out of that tree” when he was batting over 300. Well, Pagan turned out to be a very good hitter, about 300. And he’s doing great this year as well. So glad Willie is gone. Yankees smartly declined on that mess.

Well if UZR in this admittedly SSS is right, Cashman better get back on Jeters case, he is showing a -39.8 UZR/150 (which is what he has done, not necessarily his fielding ability).
